Powercat 525 Evolution - Our Experience of Ownership

We spent over £37,000 in total on a Powercat Evolution 525 which was built in Redruth by Powercats.
We collected it from the builders in February 2008 and towed it through Europe.

We were very excited with our new purchase.

To start with I will include photgraphs of our journey through Europe towing the Powercat 535 Evolution from Cornwall, onto the Ferry at Poole, then off the ferry at Cherbourg and across France and through the Alps via the Mont Blanc Tunnel and then down to Ancona through Italy.

We then caught a ferry in Ancona to Patras in Greece and then from Patras to Kefalonia which was to be the Powercat's new permanent home in the Ionian sea for which it had been built.

This sounds very interesting...

But I think you have a typo

the title says Powercat evolution 525, but in the actual blog you have 535.

A little problem I know, but which is it?

Sorry to be picky but I like things to be right, and in a new blog it pays to be a perfectionist

I didn't expect anyone to even have read this yet!!!

You have got an eye for detail I must say. Not everyone would have spotted that problem with my new Powercat 525 Evolution blog.

I will try not to make any more mistakes, but accidents happen.

Hi sad cat owner.
My friend is also having problems with his new boat, a Finngulf F41,costing rather a lot of money.
It seems the dealers are more than happy to take the order, take the money and fail to deliver on their sincere promises and more importantly their contracts.
The marine sector is rife with people who think they can take the money rip you off and be unaccountable.
Obviously these pirates have no understanding of basic consumer protection LAW that is applicable to every business in the Uk regardless.
Some advice to any future purchase or fiends who are looking for a boat.
1. Take the time to find and talk to local customers of the dealer you are looking to buy from. This is quite easy as most boats will have a sticker on from the supplying dealer.
2.Check with companies house how long the dealer has been in business...this is free with "companies house"
3. Are they a member of the "British Marine Federation", this is a body that vets stringently its members and is equivalent to ABTA etc.
4.Spend half a day at the nearest yacht club and talk to the barperson membership secetary,yard man, basically any body that will give you the time of day and explain that you are THINKING of buying a so & so from jo bloggs, and listen to their feed back.
5.If its second hand ask for the dealer to show you the details regarding the previous owner and would they mind if you contacted them. This should not be a problem with boan fide dealers who have good customer relations.
If the dealer will not do this do not buy the boat as it could be a reject or under dispute or worst case STOLEN.

    A quick update. It looks as though the British Marine Federation is mainly an organisation to help protect its members rather than a protection for consumers.
    
    Their list of member benefits online doesn't include insurance in case of dispute so not too certain whether this avenue will be any help for us.
    
    Looks like a lot of the things we think are reasons to trust a company are actually on sandy foundations alas.
    
    BMF just said they would contact Powercats and get back to us when they had their response.
    
    We have not heard anything since from the BMF. We aren't holding our breath and it doesn't give us any confidence that a company which is a member of this organisation is any more reliable than any other.

Still nothing from BMF - however Trading Standards have been very helpful in explaining the procedures for dealing with CE certification issues and ISO standards compliance.
